Deputy Game Warden Charles B. Peyton

October 18, 1908 Montana Deputy Game Warden Charles B. Peyton was shot and killed while he was attempting to arrest a person for a hunting license violation in the swan valley in northeast Missoula County.

Several days earlier Deputy Warden Peyton had been threatened by members of a hunting party. Peyton and a civilian that he had deputized to assist him in making the arrest, returned to the hunting party's camp.  During the confrontation, Peyton and the hunters became involved in a vicious gunfight during which he and four of the hunters were killed.  The deputized citizen managed to escape uninjured.
