Deputy Sheriff  Lloyd J. Stringer

March 11, 1941 (Tuesday) Missoula County Deputy Sheriff Lloyd J. Stringer was shot and killed in the Rattlesnake district, while attempting to arrest a man for homicide. 

A resident, had shot and fatally wounded a Montana Power meter reader, then barricaded himself in his cellar .

The house was surrounded by deputies and other law enforcement officers. Tear gas was used to drive the man out.  On running from the building he fired a rifle killing both Deputy Stringer and a bystander.  Deputies returned fire wounding the suspect who was then arrested.

Lloyd Stringer was 48 years old and had been with the Sheriff’s office since January 1939. Deputy Stringer was survived by his wife, a daughter, and a five year old niece.
