March 26, 1934 (Monday) Missoula City-County Traffic Officer Lyle Ward was killed at about 7:00 PM when his motorcycle crashed near the viaduct at the entrance to East Missoula.   It is believed that Ward was attempting to stop a traffic violator at the time of the accident although there are no known witnesses.  Officer Ward had been added to the Sheriff’s force on march 16th to patrol the city streets and county roads in an effort to curb traffic violators.  The motorcycle was owned by the City of Missoula.
